How it works

Vardenafil inhibits PDE-5, preserving cGMP in penile smooth muscle. With arousal, this relaxes penile vessels and improves blood inflow while reducing outflow, supporting a firm erection.

How much to take (safe, guideline-based)

• Start: 10 mg as needed about 1 hour before sex

• Adjust: 5 mg (if sensitive) or max 20 mg (if needed), no more than once in 24 h

• Do not self-escalate to 60 mg. If 20 mg feels insufficient, review timing, food, alcohol, arousal, and drug interactions with your clinician or consider an alternative agent.

How to use it

• Swallow the tablet with water 30–60 minutes before sexual activity.

• With or without food, but avoid heavy/high-fat meals near dosing.

• Limit alcohol; it blunts response and raises dizziness risk.

• Do not combine with other ED medicines the same day unless your clinician directs.

Side effects

Common, usually mild: Headache, flushing, nasal congestion, dyspepsia, dizziness; sometimes back/muscle pain, nausea, visual tint.

Serious—stop and seek urgent care: Chest pain, severe dizziness/syncope, priapism (erection >4 h), sudden vision or hearing loss, irregular heartbeat, allergic reaction.

Warnings & who should not use it

Do not use if you:

• Take nitrates (e.g., nitroglycerin) or riociguat

• Had recent MI/stroke, have unstable angina, severe hypotension/uncontrolled hypertension

• Have significant hepatic impairment, severe renal disease without supervision

• Have known QT prolongation or take Class IA/III antiarrhythmics (e.g., quinidine, amiodarone, sotalol)

• Have certain retinal disorders (e.g., retinitis pigmentosa)

• Are allergic to vardenafil or tablet excipients

• Are women or under 18

Drug and food interactions

• Contraindicated: Nitrates, riociguat

• Caution/adjust: Alpha-blockers (e.g., tamsulosin), strong CYP3A4 inhibitors (ketoconazole, itraconazole, clarithromycin, ritonavir), some antihypertensives, SSRIs/SNRIs, antihistamines

• Grapefruit can raise levels—avoid around dosing.

• High-fat meals delay onset.

Is Vilitra 60 mg more effective?
